The Leading Change Series

Change leadership for practice managers

Development programme launching Autumn 2023

A chance to develop practical insights, skills and confidence to address the most common challenges facing change leaders. Come with your questions, leave with a plan.

The Leading Change Series helps you be more successful in leading change because it helps you take a more comprehensive approach. It will help you move on from some of the most common mistakes, and putting plans before people. You will be equipped with understanding, tools and skills to address the personal, social AND technical aspects of change leadership.

This approach has already impacted leaders at all stages of their career, reducing some of the stress of leading change and accelerating progress.

  • Lead through commitment not compliance, as you connect more naturally with others’ motivation
  • Take people with you as engage intelligently with resistance and questions
  • Implement change more successfully and sustainably with real-world Improvement Science

Module 1

Using your story of why

Getting and keeping people on board with your ideas for change. A chance to deepen your understanding of how stories engage others in change, and to practice a story for your own ideas in a safe environment.

Getting others on board with change is one of the hardest challenges many leaders face. Connecting with your colleagues’ motivation is an essential task early in your project, enabling you to achieve more, faster.

In this module, we look at:

  • your questions following our first workshop on “lead with why”
  • the key ingredients for a compelling story of why
  • what kind of ‘shared values’ typically engage colleagues in general practice
  • practising your own narrative in a safe environment

You will get:

  • additional insights into how to create a compelling narrative that unleashes colleagues’ commitment
  • increased confidence to use stories of why

Module 2

Handling resistance

Addressing common responses when we try to lead change. Introducing three powerful frameworks for understanding resistance, and working up your own plans to ‘roll with resistance’.

Resistance to change is a near-universal experience for leaders and often slows or even blocks progress. Understanding what’s behind resistance will enable you to work with colleagues respectfully, compassionately and more effectively.

In this module, we look at:

  • the three most common types of resistance to change
  • your own experience of how these are seen in practice
  • the importance of a compassionate leadership approach
  • a framework for working with resistance rather than just pushing against it

You will get:

  • fresh confidence to engage positively with people when you experience resistance
  • deeper insights into successful ways to work through resistance
  • an action plan to address specific issues in your own project

Module 3

QI in the real world

A practical look at using Improvement Science methods in everyday general practice. Taking three of the most-used QI tools (process mapping, PDSA, run charts) we’ll look at the practicalities of engaging the whole team.

Promising ideas almost never work without adaptation and a process of embedding innovations alongside existing ways of working. The science of improvement helps ensure your changes are effective, safe and sustainable.

In this module, we look at:

  • the ways in which improvement (or ‘implementation’) science can help with common challenges in leading change
  • three essential tools for your work
  • approaches to using improvement methods in a truly human-centric way

You will get:

  • skills to use driver diagrams, PDSA cycles and run charts to achieve better results with fewer obstacles
  • fresh confidence in engaging colleagues more closely through the process of implementing change
